Helps and hints to get your OS wroking properly

u>Recently I have heard of people trying to manipulate the Master Boot Record and/or Windows Registry in order to "set things right" with terrible results. Never, ever try and change either. You must have a thorough understanding of PC and system architecture. Most people cannot understand how to change these system controls and usually, embarassingly enough, make their machines unusable. Ninety nine percent of the time technicians cannot help you over the phone for these problems. If the "grub" in Ubuntu is not doing it's job, or if your machine is not booting up correctly in Windows (any flavor) you should bring your machine back to the dealer for repair. Most of the time the "repair" is usually a complete re-install of either Ubuntu or Windows. Sometimes a Windows bootup problem can be easily fixed, but unless you are a qualified technician the dealer is your best bet. Most, if not all dealers, will not fix Linux problems. If the "grub" (bootup menu system) doesn't work then it's corrupted and you should re-install Ubuntu correctly.

The problems of flash macromedia in 64-bit machines are solved. Both of my 64 bit machines are running 9.04 very well with Adobe 10 flash player. Swf-dec (Swift decoder) swf-gnome and free flash player can be downloaded by first installing the Gnome Desktop Environment and then checking the boxes off for swf-gnome, swf-dec and free flash player. You click apply to download them properly. Adobe does make a 64-bit flash for certain browsers in certain systems. Everything depends on the resources on the video card, or video chips and system ram available. On 32-bit machines you should try and install flash macromedia from Adobe first before trying anything else. Putting swf-gnome and swf-dec on with Adobe flash will cause a conflict. You can have one or the other but not both.

This is a fix for the 64-bit flash. If the flash doesn't work after the 9.04 upgrade on your 64-bit amd machine you can use one of the several solutions on this site.

There are many problems relating to Compiz as well as Flash. You may not be able to get Compiz or any added desktop effects because of a resource problem. The only solution could be adding more video ram or regular ram to your system, but spending money may not be a good idea either. If you don't get flash or desktop effects to work after trying some simple things like adding swf files or Adobe Flash, then chances are Ubuntu won't work well on your system. Remember, not all machines, operating systems or CPU's are the same. Many differ greatly from others. One system operating at 2.5 Ghz with 2 GB or ram and a 256 MB video card may operate quite differently than another system with the same parameters.

This tutorial will explain How to remove, install and reconfigure xorg, without reinstalling ubuntu this is very useful if you messup with your xorg file.

Open terminal and run these commands

Remove existing xorg using the following command

sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg

Install xorg using the following command

sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg

Reconfigure xorg using the following command

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

I hope this helps some users to fix their xorg problems.

For those interested in upgrading or updating, the following commands will do nicely.
gksudo "update-manager -c -d", or sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude upgrade
Either will work well.

WUBI

http://wubi-installer.org/
Use this site to install Ubuntu 9.04 in a folder in Windows. There is no partitioning of the HD and no problems about the installation. Wubi does it all for you. It puts Ubuntu 9.04 inside your Windows OS. It also installs a menu system so you can choose your Windows OS or Ubuntu. It's a great system without the headaches of partitioning, or adding an extra HD to your machine.

When you want to uninstall Ubuntu you simply go to the control panel in Windows and uninstall it like any other program.

Lately the Wubi site has, for some unknown reason, has been taking from 7 to 12 hours to download the file. If this is happening Google up Wubi and go to the Cnet site. You'll be able to download Wubi 8.10. When you get through downloading all the updates and other apps you want in the OS go to the update manager and download 9.04. This should take less than 45 minutes depending on your ISP. After downloading any remaining updates and adjusting the Flash files you should have a successful 9.04 OS.

A word of warning for new users of Ubuntu. This also pertains to new users of computers. Do not install Ubuntu on your laptop or desktop Hard Drive. The program will wipe out all of the manufacturers drivers. You are better off using Wubi to install Ubuntu in Windows on your laptop or desktop. You should also be familiar with your bios so you can add a second HD to the desktop. Another good idea would be to go to your manufacturer's web site and download all the necessary drivers, including wireless drivers, network drivers, and all other pertinent drivers to a 2 or 4 GB USB thumb drive or SD card.

After the initial installation here are some things you can do to make your OS more enjoyable to use:
1. Go to System and choose Administration.
Scroll down to Software Sources and choose what you want for downloads, and how you want the downloads delivered.
2. After the initial installation you will see an orange gear or arrow in the upper right corner of the screen. After a few minutes it will appear. This will be your initial giant download after installation. Click on the gear or arrow and wait for the download to finish.
3. Go to System and choose Administration. Scroll down to Synaptic Package Manager. On the left side of the manager scroll down to Gnome Desktop Environment, universe. On the top of the right side scroll down to Gnome. Check the box opposite Gnome. This will give you the Gnome Desktop Environment. Check off any other Gnome app you would like to add such as the Gnome Office Suite.
4. Next go to System and choose Administration. Scroll down to Printing. Your USB or Network printer should be listed. Right click on your choice of printer and select properties. In the properties box select your printer as default. In the location field type \\(name of computer)\(name of printer)
.
These items should make your OS a more enjoyable system to use. We will be adding more sites every week. Happy trails.
